About Us

The Feeds Innovation Institute is mandated to draw together a wide cross section of scientific disciplines and industry interests focused on feed product development. The rationale for existence is the development and utilization of University of Saskatchewan (UofS) infrastructure and expertise for purposes of optimizing the value derived from the Saskatchewan feeds value chain. As an entity within the UofS and through financial support by SAF, FII endeavours to promote the public good of FII and the public institutions FII associates with. The combination of fee-for-service and public good mandates is a basic tenant of FII and the rationale and philosophy by which FII does not compete with private consultants in the feeds industry.

There are three stakeholder groups which are important for the long term success of FII as the vehicle to commercialize UofS feeds research activities. The three stakeholder groups are the UofS, Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food (SAF) and private industry. These three stakeholder groups have interacted through the history of feeds research and extension at the University of Saskatchewan. The three stakeholders consulted and co-developed the rationale for reorganization and re-scoping of the Prairie Feeds Resource Centre into the Feeds Innovation Institute and have been involved in all strategic planning of the Feeds Innovation Institute to date. These groups are represented with the governance structures of the FII.

The FII is a UofS Type A research centre. FII is governed by the "Steering Committee" which consists of the Deans of Agriculture and Bioresources, Engineering, the N. Edwards School of Business and the Deputy Minister of SAF. Connections to Saskatchewan industry are made through the "Industry Advisory Committee" which is created from the paid membership of FII. The long term strategic direction of FII will be shaped through the formation of the "Strategic Adivsory Board", which has not yet been created.
